Computers in USC’s Leavey Library
Compared to any of my own computers that I use, these computers are ridiculously fast. It feels much snappier than anything else I’ve used. Everything on the internet seems to load instantly. This is what computing should be like. My only complaints are that this keyboard sucks (it’s a typical Dell keyboard) and that ITS (Information Technology Services) uses software that sets the monitor to a nonnative resolution. It’s a 17″ LCD monitor (Dell 1703FP), and its native resolution is 1280×1024. Come on. Things are so much sharper when the monitor is run at its native resolution!
The computer is a Dell OptiPlex GX270, 3 GHz Intel Pentium 4, 1 GB RAM. It feels really slick. I’d love to have a LAN party in any of USC’s computing centers. Now I really see why this stuff costs so ridiculously much. I mean, many of our professors are not all that great, so where does all our tuition money go?
My computer is number 404. Haha.
I want to check out the University Park Health Center sometime. Maybe I should get a checkup or something. Haven’t done one for years.

I was thinking that I really need to get a laptop because it would be so much more convenient around campus. Now that I’ve experienced using a computer in Leavey, I don’t think I have as much of a need anymore. But a laptop would really come in handy in VKC for our EE 101 study sessions, and so on.
The software distribution model here is much more efficient than the system at Walnut High School, which was getting major upgrades and overhauls while I was there. Here’s a list of the software they include on all ITS computer systems (Windows). Quite an extensive list, though they could use a couple more. Pretty sweet that they have Firefox 2.0, though, and it’s the browser of choice.
